Origins of Oregano

Oregano (Origanum vulgare) is a culinary herb, which belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae). Lamiaceae is the name of a plant family with around 3,500 species, which are characterized by strong pleasant aromas. The Lamiaceae includes a wide variety of culinary herbs, including mint, rosemary, basil, thyme, sage, savory, marjoram and lavender.

The Origanum vulgare species is found in parts of Europe, and particularly the Mediterranean region, as well as in parts of southern and central Asia. Its leaves possess strong flavour and aroma, and are used in a variety of cuisines. Translated from Greek, the name oregano means "joy of the mountains” - from the words oros (meaning mountain) and ganos (meaning joy).

The leaves of the spice contain a number of polyphenols, such as rosmarinic acid.

Interestingly, the oil of oregano has been used in food preservation to prevent rancidity and prolong the shelf life of food products due to its ability to reduce the rate of microbe growth.
